Howard Hughes Medical Institute Janelia Farm Research Campus Director of Laboratory Support Services Howard Hughes Medical Institute?s (HHMI) Janelia Farm Research Campus is a unique, world-class research community in Ashburn, VA. We are seeking a Director of Laboratory Support Services at our innovative medical research facility. Over the next few years, Janelia Farm Research Campus will grow to over 500 employees in a uniquely supportive campus environment. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Director of Laboratory Support Services will be an integral member of the operational management team and is responsible for managing laboratory support services including Lab Administration, Library Services, Materials Management, EH&S/Compliance and Special Projects, and providing leadership and strategic thinking in these areas. This position will coordinate resources in support of Janelia?s mission, and recommend and implement non-bureaucratic, efficient solutions. The director will provide guidance to five managers to ensure the departments are providing a high level of customer service to Janelia researchers. Responsibilities include - Identifying opportunities for process improvement - Participating in developing and implementing policies - Managing compliance with all relevant regulations - Overseeing materials management including store room, stock room and shipping and receiving - Negotiating service agreements with outside vendors and ensuring users? needs are being met - Providing strategic support and guidance to the library on subscriptions and services provided - Ensuring level of library support meets needs of research and administration - Providing recommendations on operational issues in support of the Visiting Scientists Program - Quantitative and qualitative analyses on a variety of operational issues, recommending action plans to Chief Operating Officer, and implementing changes as appropriate. Candidates should have a Bachelor?s degree in business management, bioscience management or other relevant degree and minimum 7-10 years experience managing departments with 3-5 years in a laboratory environment. Must have excellent analytical skills to manage projects, resources, and budgets and demonstrated ability to identify issues and propose effective, streamlined solutions. Excellent judgment, attention to detail and discretion, excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills are required, and the ability to take action in ambiguous or unclear situations. Also required is the ability to train and coach staff effectively to build a strong team and department with exceptional customer service. FACULTY POSITION The Beirne B. Carter Center for Immunology Research The Beirne B. Carter Center for Immunology Research at the University of Virginia School of Medicine invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. We seek candidates with expertise and interest in one or more of the following areas: the biochemistry, cell and molecular biology of inflammatory cells and the innate immune system, the regulation of leukocyte activation and trafficking or lymphocyte development as well as candidates who employ modern imaging techniques to analyze the immune system. Candidates must have a Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent degree as well as appropriate postdoctoral experience. The successful candidate will be expected to establish and maintain an energetic independent and well-funded research program as well as participate in the teaching of graduate and medical students. Postdoctoral Associate - Microfluidics and Mass Spectrometry Specialist
The Virginia Bioinformatics Institute (VBI) is a research institute dedicated to the study of the biological sciences. By using bioinformatics, which combines transdisciplinary approaches to information technology and biology, researchers at VBI interpret and apply vast amounts of biological data generated from basic research to some of today's key challenges in the biomedical sciences. The institute develops genomic, proteomic and bioinformatics tools that can be applied to the study of infectious diseases as well as the discovery of new vaccines, drugs and diagnostic targets. VBI strongly emphasizes synergistic interactions among faculty and is organized around the concept of team science. The Microfluidics group at VBI aims at developing fully integrated, stand-alone microfluidic devices with mass spectrometry detection for high-throughput proteomic investigations as currently seeks a Postdoctoral Associate for Microfluidics and Mass Spectrometry. The Postdoctoral Associate will work as part of a team of scientists and researchers for designing, preparing and evaluating performance of microfluidic devices. In doing so, will be responsible for developing multidimensional separations on the chip through developing novel microchip-MS interfaces, and preparing peptide/protein samples from cellular extracts. Qualified candidates must possess a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry or Biology, or related field; demonstrated experience with microanalytical separation methods and ESI-MS instrumentation; possess creativity and ability to work independently as well as with research group; and have strong work habits, motivation, and good communication skills. Preferences will be given to candidates having expertise with mass spectrometry detection. This position may be funded by federal funds and due to restrictions in the contract from the granting agency, offer of employment may require prior approval from the granting agency. Initial appointment will be for one year, and may be renewable thereafter depending on satisfactory performance, needs of service and available funding. Microbiology Group Leader - Biofuels/Biomass Surrey We are looking for a skilled microbiologist to join a team of talented scientists looking to exploit the abilities of thermophilic bacteria in industrial processes -in particular the production of green, second-generation biofuels from sustainable biomass-derived feedstocks such as agricultural and forestry waste. This is a challenging role and will require flexibility, persverance and technical ability. The position will be based at the company's facility in Surrey and the Microbiology Group Leader will manage a team of experienced scientists working on developing the next generation of sustainable eco-friendly biofuels. You will provide specific technical expertise and leadership in the areas of biomass pre-treatment, enzyme hydrolysis and small-scale fermentation development. In addition you will be required to prepare research plans and co-ordinate, monitor and report, research activities as well as preparing publications as required.
